Gillian was born in South Africa and studied History of Art in high school. This introduction to art piqued her interest in painting, beginning with watercolour. She immigrated to Canada in 1981 and is currently based in Calgary and Canmore.

After retiring from a career in social work, Gillian has participated in numerous art workshops in watercolour and acrylics from 2011 to the present time.

Gillian's evolution into oil painting began in 2021 when she attended a workshop with Doug Swinton. Currently, Gillian continues in this medium and attends classes with Doug Swinton in Calgary.
